This region borders Venezuela and Guyana in north west Brazil. I was drawn to this view on account of the contrast between the vibrant green reflections in the distance and the rusty hues of the water in the foreground as it shallowed.

The edge of the forest area where I pitched my easel is renowned for its herds of “porco do mato” or peccaries (very fast-moving boar like creatures) which on account of their strong scent, are also called “skunk pigs”. They travel in groups of up to a hundred. I could hear them deep in the undergrowth making a chattering noise with their fierce tusks that warns potential predators to stay away.
